Leaking Refrigeration Units – Water on the Floor

Attorney Dennis SchaeferAuthor: Attorney Dennis Schaefer

All year long, but especially in the summer walking in stores near refrigerated display units can be dangerous. It is not uncommon for stores to place safety mats in front of refrigerated displays. However, many stores do not use any safety mats or other warning devices to notify customers of potential danger.

The sources of the typical refrigerated display counter dangers are either extreme condensation, over flow of the drip pan or a simple leak. Whatever the cause, the consequences are extremely serious. The result of allowing these dangers to exist put the stores customers at extraordinary risk of injury. The fact is in almost of these cases the store owner was aware of the problem, and chose to not completely correct the problem.

The warning is clear. Always be careful when walking near refrigerated displays because frequently water will appear from underneath the display. This is the exact spot where customers walk when looking for items in the counter. This is the spot where your attention is diverted from the floor to the items you want to purchase.
