83-Year-Old Venice Man Killed in Parrish Truck Accident on US 301

On February 11, a Venice man died after he was involved in a Parrish truck accident in Manatee County, according to Bay News 9. The crash occurred at 11:35 a.m. on US 301 near the intersection with Doris Road in Parrish.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 83 year old was driving his 1999 Buick south on US 301 when he crossed the median for unknown reasons. The elderly man drove a short distance on the wrong side of US 301 and entered a curve in the roadway. At the same time, a tractor trailer was traveling north, approaching the same curve from the opposite direction.

Upon seeing the man driving the wrong way, the driver of the tractor trailer attempted to avoid the accident by braking and swerving to the left, but the right front of the man’s Buick struck the right front of the tractor trailer, according to police officials.

The 83 year old died at the scene of the fatal collision. The driver of the tractor trailer was taken to Blake Medical Center with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

This fatal Florida truck accident proves how destructive and devastating a tractor trailer can be to a car. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that the average 5-axle tractor trailer weighs close to 30 tons, almost 15 times heavier than the average motor vehicle.
