History of Auto Owners Insurance

In 1916, Auto Owners Insurance was created by Vern V. Moulton in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. At the time of its creation, the company had no capital and rented out a room in a local bank. After a little under a year of operation, Moulton moved the company to Lansing, Michigan. At that time, the Great Depression had finally hit the area, but the Auto Owners Insurance Company still held its ground without failing in the troubled market.

By February 1933 the firm had written over $2.5 million in insurance premiums and was still growing. By 1940, Auto Owners Insurance started general casualty insurance. Over the next five years from 1940 to 1945, Auto Owners Insurance purchased three more buildings for their expanding business and office staff. By 1951, Auto Owners consolidated its office space into one corporate office in downtown Lansing, Michigan. A new home office was constructed in 1975 and is just over 400,000 square feet in size.

From 1916 to 1935, Auto Owners Insurance provided auto insurance to Michigan residents only. Then in 1936, Auto Owners expanded its services to both Ohio and Indiana. By the late 1940’s, Auto Owners had finally expanded into Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Florida, Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina. With their continued growth, over the next twenty years, Auto Owners Insurance kept with their expansion until they were able to offer auto and casualty insurance to 26 states throughout the United States.

As of 2009, Auto Owners has over 75 insurance offices operating within 26 different states. The corporate office is located in a residential complex known as the Verndale located in downtown Lansing.

As of 2009, A.M. Best has listed Auto Owners with an A++ for superior practices. The Auto Owners Life Insurance Company has also been given an A+ for superior practices and both companies are rated highly amongst Consumer Reports and other insurance rating agencies. Auto Owners Insurance is held within good standards by both the Better Business Bureau and Michigan Department of Business. There are no outstanding claims, lawsuits, or liens against the company.
