Cape Coral Man Killed in Pine Island Truck Accident

A Cape Coral man died from injuries he sustained in a Pine Island truck accident on January 3, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Just after midnight, the 36-year-old truck driver was traveling east on Pine Island Road. For unknown reasons, he unexpectedly lost control of his truck just west of US 41. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the semitrailer began to rotate counter-clockwise, causing the truck to travel into the grass median. The side of the truck collided with a tree and traffic sign, causing the truck to overturn and strike a second tree.

The driver was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Police officials say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. There are many factors that could have caused this tragic accident, and it is fortunate that other motorists on the road were not harmed. There are many procedures and precautions in place to make the roads safer when shared with trucks; however, the industry has much to improve on.

When truck drivers are exhausted from working long hours, lose concentration or are pressured to deliver their load on time, they can easily make deadly mistakes on the road. Truck drivers sometimes even turn to OTC or illegal drugs to stay awake on the road, which is extremely dangerous and will cloud judgment and lower reaction times while driving.
