Founded in 1998 under the direct management of SiliconSierra Holdings, Inc., Esurance began offering web-based personal auto insurance policies in December of 1999. In 2000, Esurance was acquired by Folksamerica Holding Company, Inc. This was a direct subsidiary of White Mountains Insurance Group, and therefore Esurance became a direct subsidiary of White Mountains Insurance Group as well.

Esurance began internet marketing campaigns in 2009 focusing more on their appeal to technology, but still assuring the public that they were environmentally friendly. In 2010, Esurance began using marketing campaigns sporting a pink-haired spy by the name of Erin Esurance. This spy posed as an auto insurance agent with a direct goal to provide the best auto insurance to people across America.

Financial Profile of Esurance

Esurance is a member of the Better Business Bureau and is in good standing. Their owners, White Mountains Insurance Group has sky rocketing stocks and is in good standing with the BBB as well. In 2010, Esurance received the St. Petersburg Times “Top Places to Work” award for the Tampa Bay, Florida region. Esurance has been an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau since March of 2004. The BBB has rated Esurance with an A+ for being reliable and with no complaints on record.

As of the end of 2009, Esurance was estimated to have written over 4,000 new premium policies and has earned over 4 billion in sales. Their owner, White Mountains Insurance Group is also up in the stock market and has an estimated growth rate of 194%. As of 2010, Esurance has over 1,700 employees. These employees work out of call centers and mobile sites that report back to San Francisco, California.
