Gainesville Truck Accident Leaves Woman Severely Injured

A woman was left with life-threatening injuries after a Gainesville truck accident. According to Gainesville Police, a semi-truck driving south on Northeast Waldo Road hit a female pedestrian, then slowed down and fled the scene. An officer heard a loud crash when the collision occurred and witnessed the truck driving away, then he saw the woman in the middle of the road. She suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident and was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital.

Another officer stopped the truck at the intersection of Southeast 16th Avenue and Southeast Williston Road and observed that the 62-year-old driver seemed “sleepy” and that a wig was stuck in the front grill of the truck.

Police later discovered that the truck driver had been continuously driving for more than 12 hours. An investigation into the accident is still ongoing.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sets strict rules and regulations for commercial truck drivers to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. Driver fatigue can occur when truck drivers spend too much time behind the wheel and do not take federally required breaks. When drivers are on the road for many hours at a time, they easily lose concentration and can experience significant exhaustion, leading to the possibility of fatal truck accidents.

When truck drivers are negligent and ignore the law, they deserve to be held accountable for the accidents they cause and any resulting injuries.
