Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of automobile accidents on our roads today. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have teamed up in an effort to make all Floridians aware of this fact during the month of April, which has been designated as distracted driver awareness month.

Though teenage drivers only represent about 5 percent of licensed drivers, they have been the cause of approximately 12 percent of distracted driving crashes. Experts say it is important to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel and your thoughts on the task at hand. Texting while driving is clearly to blame for a great deal of distracted driver accidents as the texting driver is caused to simultaneously take their hands off the steering wheel and their eyes off the road. Texting also requires one to think about something other than driving, which allows texting while driving to cause the trifecta of distractions.

The bottom line is that Florida officials would like all drivers to be 100 percent focused when they are behind the wheel. One way to help reach this goal is through driver awareness. With over 19 million registered vehicles and over 15 million licensed drivers, it is very important for every Florida driver to be as careful as possible. Clearly, the best way to increase driver safety is to try and avoid as many distractions as possible. Hopefully, the designation of April as driver awareness month will help result in less automobile accidents on Florida’s roads.
