What does my UM (uninsured motorist) cover?

Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) will pay for damages for injuries, pain and suffering, and unpaid medical bills and wages to the extent that the at fault party has insufficient coverage. In some cases, the at fault party does not carry bodily injury coverage to pay for injuries or damages caused by their own negligence. Unfortunately, bodily injury coverage is not required by Florida law to obtain or renew license tags. As a result, uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage is an extremely important coverage to carryon your own auto policy. UM insurance will cover all damages for injuries, scarring, pain and suffering, together with all outstanding medical bills and wage loss resulting from an accident. UM will also provide additional coverage for damages caused should the at fault party not have sufficient limits on their bodily injury coverage. Many policies in Florida have bodily injury coverage in amounts as little as $10,000.00 or $25,000.00. Uninsured motorist coverage will also compensate injured occupants of the insured vehicle over and above the underlying limits of the at fault party, regardless of the amount of coverage, should the damages exceed the bodily injury coverage provided.

Gregory Dell:

Yvonne,

If you have an uninsured motorist policy and the uninsured driver caused the accident, then your husband could file a wrongful death claim for damages.
